Committee found half asleep!

The gremlins seem to have got into this year's fixture card folks. Those of us who turned up for racing this week discovered the tide had forgotten to turn up resulting in a postponement while we all did a "water dance".

Unfortunately, this was too much like a rain dance meaning a similar problem on Tuesday was academic as there was more water flowing down from the sky than down the river.
We are currently having a review of the card and an update will be issued shortly..

Success For 2012 Learn To Sail

Four new sailors achieved their stage2 or level 3 certificates this weekend at Lairwell. Breezy conditions had the safety boat crews anticipating some swimming demonstrations, but the new guys failed to oblige.

We look forward to welcoming the new sailors to our regular events and well done to all!

How many instructors are needed to capsize a Feva

Part of learning to sail is learning what to do when things go wrong. Perth Leisure Pool allowed us the use of their facilities to give our trainees a capsize drill. Small boats do fall over occasionally, so practice in the safe warm waters make learning more pleasant for all.
The answer to the question is three to four pulling on various parts of the boat.

Learn To Sail Course 2012 Perth Sailing Club

Perth Sailing Club aims to get learners competently sailing by themselves by the end of the week long course.

Each training session begins with a short class room lesson with most of the training being done on the water and is very much practical and hands on.

Sailing starts on Dry Land
One of the Senior Instructors is showing a training the art of rigging a mirror dingy.

Perfect Conditions on River Tay
We use a wide variety of dingies during the course to give the Trainees a broad experience of the different handling characteristics.

Time to Set Sail
Sailing with Due Care
The Learn To Sail Course also covers the basiscs of the Rules Of The Road.

Perth Sailing Club sails on the River Tay, just south of Perth which has one of the busiest inland harbours in Scotland.

Note that all the  trainees are safely ashore!

Trainees are also taught to crew so that they understand the importance of team work, communication and tactics.

Crewing is a vital skill
As soon as the Instructor thinks that the student is ready, the student is taught how to helm

A Student helming with confidence

A big thanks to John Ferguson for the images and to all the Instructors and other members of Perth Sailing Club for their time to make this course possible.

If you are interested in sailing why not come along and give it a try?

Minutes of PSC Committee 25th May at 19.50.

Minutes of PSC Committee.

25th May at 19.50.

1. Present Malcolm Moore, Ian Sadler, Keith Fergie, Bob Watson, Eric Taylor, Audrey
Robertson, Katriona Sanwell.

2. Apologies. John Fergusson, Collin Fullerton.

3. Meeting with St. Andrews. Representatives of St Andrews met MM, ET and Sandy
Roger on May 21st. Presented new proposals for their boat shed which were in line
with our original suggestions. Proximity of the electricity pole prevented the shed
coming further back, also possible difficulties in excavating the bank near to it.
Still problems over manoeuvring the ‘eight’, which might require going into the
area outside the gate. Taking down the stone wall would compromise our security,
unless the gate could be moved further up.- MM to speak to David Clark [TSF] about
extending our fence. Anxieties about losing our trailer parking.- agreed to let them
know in broad agreement with the new plans and will put to an EGM of members
when final plans in place. To take professional advice [Condies] about the legal side
of allowing a £80,000 building on our land when this happens.

4. Debrief of Perth sail and open day. Lucky with weather and good turnout. Much
publicity from AR and KF helped, but short notice. More would have attended with
more notice. Requests for more Open Days. Agreed to hold two more on July 25th and
August 22nd, combined with a BBQ/ Social evening.

5. Sailing Course. JF reported 5 candidates. MM to contact the swimming pool for
permission to use it for capsize drill. Agreed to try to allot ‘mentors’ to shadow and
encourage candidates to keep on coming to the club after the course.

6. Date next meeting. TBA.

The Five Essentials

Five things you should be thinking about whenever you go out sailing. Any fool can launch a bath in a duckpond, hoist a bedsheet on a broom handle and sail to the other end.
By understanding the five essentials, you should be able to work out how to get back again.
Friday's lesson covers balance, boat trim, sail setting, centreboard and course sailed.

2012 Learn To Sail Course Update

Two days down of the 2012 training course and everyone seems to be making good progress.

The squall which came through did not catch anyone out, and gave even the mose experienced a bit of excitement.

We look forward to the next session on Thursday evening.

The Learners being shown the ropes!

Question: When does a sailing dinghy become a submarine?

Answer: When a watertight bulkhead stops being watertight. This is what happened to Bob and Eric one very windy Sunday morning early in May, as you can see in the following video.

Perth Sailing Club Committee News 25th May 2012

Committee News
A meeting was held on 25th May.
A recent meeting with the estates people from St Andrews was held and their new plans for a boat shed produced. A copy is available on the club board.
These are now in line with what was originally suggested and the committee agreed to allow them to go ahead to produce derailed proposals. Before these are finally accepted we will call an EGM for the membership to have a final vote. In the meantime please feel free to approach any committee member and make your views know.
The sail to Perth and the Open day were discussed. We were blessed with some nice weather on the Open day and a number of families and individual came down and seemed impressed. The numbers were put down to the efforts to publicise the event by Audrey and Keith, albeit at short notice.

Since there have been requests by other people for more access to open days it has been decided to hold two more open days on the evening of 25th July and 22nd August, with perhaps a combined social event, such as a BBQ.
Please let anyone know and encourage any friends or colleagues who might be interested in trying sailing with us to come along.
The sailing course is starting. The swimming pool has been booked to allow capsize drill to take place on Sunday 10th June.

John Fergusson is grateful for all the help we can give him. It was agreed that we would arrange for the newcomers to be assigned a mentor after the course to encourage newcomers  to continue with us after they have their certificates.
Malcolm Moore,
Commodore

Perth Sailing Club Committee News 3rd April 2012

Committee News

There was a meeting on 3rd of April when it was agreed to send the Rear Commodore [Bob Watson] to a Senior Instructor’s course, so that we can be a bit more self contained and be able to train our own instructors.
It was approved to create a new ‘Past Commodore’s board’ as space has run out on the present boards.
Trace heating has been installed in the club to allow the water to remain switched on in the winter for the rowing club.
The possibility of getting some second hand cupboards to upgrade the Galley, now that the disused door has been blocked off, is to be explored.
Another meeting was held after the Heathens race on 29th April mainly to discuss the arrangements for the sailing exhibition and the open day.
It was felt the profile of the club might be better served by a static exhibition in the High street or St John’s centre rather than just sailing up into the city, and permission to explore this were put into train.
It was also agreed to market the club by means of social media, blogs and twitter. Can we ask member to promulgate the club through their friends, as new members are what we need.
The quiz night was a great success and a fine boost to club funds. Audrey and John are to be congratulated and thanked for their efforts.
We are still having problems with one of the outboards. It was agreed to allow the Boats Officer until the end of this season to fix it. If this is not possible we are going to have to replace it, which will be an expense in the region of £2500.
The RYA are using the club for a meeting on 30th May in the evening.
Finally Keith Fergie has volunteered to take over the secretarial duties which Jose da Costa has had to relinquish and for this I am most grateful.
Malcolm Moore.

Learn To Sail Course 2012 at Perth Sailing Club

For several years, Perth Sailing Club has been running Learn To Sail Course from our base on the River Tay just south of Perth.

Our Instructors are all very experienced sailors and are very good at teaching all ages and abilities how to sail.

The course is run over a week with some class room time but the real focus is to get the students onto the water for as much hand on sailing experience as possible.

The learning is tailored to the student's ability and there is of course full safety and first aid cover.

By the end of the weeks course, the students will be able to sail competently in a two person boat such as a Wanderer or a Firefly.

At the end of the course, the students will be assessed by a visiting RYA Instructor and all being well, the students will be awarded their RYA 1 & 2 Sailing Certificates.

The course will be running on these dates with the times given as the start times. We would suggest that students arrive 30 mins before so they can get changed into their sailing gear.
